Oguchi Onyewu: An American in Milan

By: Lotte Cox | July 7th, 2009

[Buck up, Gooch, you're goin' to Milan!]

After a couple weeks of being one of the few Italian teams not allegedly interested in him, AC Milan announced this morning that Oguchi Onyewu will be joining the big time, trading Belgian champions Standard Liège for a chance in Serie A. And, since Alessandro Nesta hasn’t gone a full month without getting hurt in years, Gooch will probably have plenty of chances to prove himself in Italy.

Just by turning up, he’ll be tripling the sheer mass of AC Milan’s squad.

(I’m pretty sure, for example, that it’d take six Pippo Inzaghis to equal the weight of one Gooch.)

May everyone at Milan enjoy touching appreciate him like his NT teammates do.

This move can only help the USMNT. I’m not sure how effective he’ll be. Hopefully he’ll learn how to recover quickly when caught out of position. His speed is always a bit questionable in that regard.

I know there’s a handful of Americans playing in Italy these days (Danny Szetela comes to mind, but I’m not sure whether he joined Brescia permanently or not), but the last high-profile one I can remember was Lalas — that was a loooooong time ago. The timing seems right, in terms of the USMNT’s prestige, but he’s obviously going to have to succeed to keep the “fluke” label from being stuck on him and the USMNT as a whole.

obviously i’d like him to get major playing time but just being around nesta (and i bet maldini will always be around trying to help as well)…learning from those 2 can’t hurt him in any way.

This is great! I knew going to the finals would mean more opportunities in Europe for the American players :)
